The Hidden Costs of Indecision
August 19, 2024

We often delay decisions to avoid potential costs of making the wrong choice. But we forget that indecision itself has costs, both seen and unseen.

Mental and Emotional Drain: A lingering, unresolved decision occupies a huge amount of mental bandwidth. It's a background process that's constantly draining your energy and creating a low-level hum of anxiety.

Opportunity Cost: While you're stuck on decision A, you're missing out on opportunities B, C, and D. The time and energy you spend deliberating could be spent learning, growing, or enjoying something else.

Loss of Momentum: Inaction breeds more inaction. The longer you stay still, the harder it can be to get moving again.

This isn't an argument for making rash choices. It's an argument for recognizing that "waiting" is not a neutral, cost-free state. Often, the safest move—one that reduces these hidden costs—is to take a small, reversible step to get the decision off your plate and free up your precious energy.
